The Sacred Heart of Jesus

Today is the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pope Francis called this the “feast of love,” saying that the Heart of Jesus is “the greatest human expression of divine love” and “the ultimate symbol of God’s mercy.”

Devotion to the Sacred Heart is not an individualistic pious practice. Those truly devoted to Jesus strive to have hearts like his. Pope Francis said: “We must have Jesus’ heart who, ‘When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd’” (Matthew 9: 36).

The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network is “A Way of the Heart.” We seek a deeper relationship with Jesus so that we can share the desires and concerns that lie deep in his Heart. One day at a time we strive to look at the people we meet and our entire world as Jesus does. This conversion of heart leads us to open our hearts to others and to reach out to them in acts of mercy.

This is Pope Francis’ dream for us: “I like to dream of a Church that lives the compassion of Jesus. Compassion is to ‘suffer with,’ to feel what the others feel. A Church that has a heart without boundaries; but not just the heart, also the look, the gentleness of the look of Jesus, which often is more eloquent than many words.”
